JACQUELINE SCHMIDT
Jacqui had never liked the cold. It didn't snow in Virginia, it didn't snow in Germany, why should it snow in California of all places? She hated the way she had to dress every time the mercury dipped below forty degrees.
However, Jacqui really did need to ride Kerry before he exploded from built-up energy. Today was no different. She ran down to the barn in just breeches and a sweater, which was basically suicide. She was shivering by the time she made it to the tack room and put on a more substantial coat, gloves, and thick socks. Kerry did not appreciate this, because her winter breeches lacked pockets and therefore... no treats.
Jacqui flexed her fingers a few times to get the blood back in them, then walked out into the aisle to grab Kerry. The bay gelding stood quietly in his stall while she pulled off his blanket. Thank God he was mostly clean; Jacqui didn't think she could stand still long enough to groom him. She needed to move. She jogged back to the tack room, grabbed her saddle and bridle, and tacked Kerry in a hurry. The faster she started working, the better.
In just a few minutes, the pair were in the otherwise empty indoor arena. Jacqui looped Kerry's reins through her stirrups and hoped no one else wanted to get into the arena, because there was no way she was pulling on a lounge line. She clapped loudly, and Kerry took off at a canter around the arena. While he warmed himself up, Jacqui set up two jumps, a 3' vertical and a 2'6" oxer, in the center of the ring. She glanced into the aisle and made sure no one was coming before she tried to catch Kerry.
It took a while, since he was so wound up, but Jacqui finally latched onto his reins and stopped his frantic gallop. She swung herself up into the saddle and asked for a walk. Kerry pulled on the bit until Jacqui settled herself in the saddle and asked for a brisk trot.
